Judging at Breath Weapon Gaming Events
-
Breath Weapon Gaming firmly believes in the active judging style for all of our events. We want to ensure both players are having a great time and we want to assist in ensuring the games are played as close to the rules as possible. Keep in mind, a perfect game has never been played!
-
Absolutely. Active judging is the process where a judge walks around and actively monitors games. In the event they witness an action being carried out contrary to the rules (99% of the time by mistake) they will intervene on the game, apply a corrective action and ensure both players agree to the current game state before allowing them to proceed. This philosophy in judging serves to ensure that unrecognized mistakes don’t compound and alter the outcome of the game. These situations lead to feels bad situations for both players.
-
Don’t be! This absolutely why we ensure that judges are available to help navigate the complexities of the game. At any time there is disagreement between players on the current game state such as a distance to be measured, rules interaction, etc. you should feel 100% comfortable calling a judge over to adjudicate the interaction.
-
This will always be at the judge’s discretion and we plan on preparing a more comprehensive guidance sometime soon. However, examples could be yellow cards (without points deductions) for minor infractions, yellow cards (with points deductions) for more serious infractions and red cards.
We expect red cards to be very infrequent and they are reserved for players that consistently play incorrectly - with significant influence on the outcome of games - or players that have demonstrated aggressive behavior or who were found to be intentionally cheating.
Please Note - Breath Weapon Gaming will not tolerate any any aggressive behaviour towards event staff or other players. In the event a player is found displaying this type of behaviour they will be required to leave the event.
Paint Judging
This section will answer all questions pertaining to Paint scoring and Conversion Approval.
Battle Ready is defined by Games Workshop and shown here, Models must be this standard to qualify for hobby track.
An overview of Battle Ready can also be found at Citadel Colour – Just What Is Battle Ready? - Warhammer Community
Unpainted models will be tracked with the default 10 points for being battle ready. If both opponents agree then 10 points are given for battle ready. If there is any conflict between players the judge will use the below image as reference.
Conversions
Much like with Painting if both players agree to conversions, weapons etc then we will not inspect models. What both players require is to know what weapon is what, this can be identified with different weapons on the models, elastics, or anything else to make sure each player can identify. You do not need to have everything that you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) as long as you can clearly show the opponent which equipment is which and there is no confusion.
In the case a model is not Games Workshop (3d prints, converted, older models etc) We have a model approval channel on Discord. To make the judge's life easy we suggest you get models pre approved for use on this channel. Failing to do this will mean the judge of the event has to make a call if ever a model is brought into question.
Example:
Dan wants to use his cool creature caster model as a greater daemon, his opponent has questions about the size.
Dan had his model pre approved - no action taken
Dan did not have his model approved but has an extra GW official model on hand - Judge will determine if he can use it based on the size at the table.
Dan did not get approval of his model and has no original GW model to compare - The judge now has to make the decision quickly which may not be in favor. Dan has accepted this risk and may end up having a model pulled as result or be given the OK to play. This is up to the Judge of the Event of the day and does not mean the next Judge has to honor the same ruling in future.
